Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics maker and key supplier for Apple, is significantly expanding its operations in India. Foxconn will build an Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) facility in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, marking their first major presence there and diversifying Apple's supply chain away from China. This move is part of Apple's plans to diversify and reduce reliance on China as part of diversifying supply chains globally.

Location and Investment Strategy

The proposed 300-acre facility will be situated along Yamuna Expressway, an area rapidly evolving into an electronics manufacturing hub. This location boasts proximity to key infrastructure—such as Noida International Airport—ensuring improved logistics and connectivity. Investment is projected to generate about 40,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing an important boost to local economies.
But this is not the first investment. Foxconn has invested or proposing to invest multiple projects in India:
  • Foxconn’s new unit in Karnataka is preparing to start iPhone shipments in June 2025, making it the company’s second-largest iPhone production site globally after China.
  • Near Chennai, Foxconn has launched a $1.5 billion (~₹132 billion) display module facility at ESR Oragadam. This plant, set to create around 14,000 jobs, supports Apple’s push to manufacture iPhones in India — targeting 32% of global iPhone output by 2025.
  • The HCL-Foxconn joint venture has received Cabinet approval to build an OsAT (assembly & test) semiconductor fab near Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. With a ₹3,706 crore ($435 million) investment, the plant aims to handle 20,000 wafers/month and 36 million display-driver chips/year, targeting operations by 2027.

Plans and Goals for Expansion Production Goals

Foxconn's expansion in India is part of its overall plan to boost production capacity. They aim to manufacture between 25 million and 30 million iPhones by the end of 2025 in India – more than double their production compared to 2018. Their Greater Noida facility will likely play a pivotal role in realizing these targets.

Support of Government Policies.

Indian government initiatives, including the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and its “Make in India” initiative, have fostered an attractive environment for foreign investments into electronics manufacturing in India. Foxconn was attracted by these policies because they align with its mission of localizing production while strengthening supply chain resilience.

Conclusion

Foxconn's new electronics manufacturing services facility in Greater Noida demonstrates India's rising prominence as an international electronics hub. Not only has its opening expanded Apple's supply chain diversification, but it has also significantly benefited India through job creation and technological advancement – with completion fast approaching, it stands poised to become an iconic cornerstone of India's electronics manufacturing landscape.
